Describe Yourself:I'm 47 and live in Nashville, Tennessee. I've been married to my husband for almost 19 years. We have one son who is almost 13. I earned a law degree and practiced law before my son was born. Afterwards, I chose to stay at home with my son. I don't have any regrets, though it was an outcome I never would have predicted for myself. It was a huge surprise that I had a maternal side--I didn't get a lot of real good mothering myself. We have been homeschooling for 4 years. It has nothing to do with religion. We're pretty darn low-key on the whole religion thing; we don't even go to church. I feel like I have to say that because religious zeal is what most people think of when they hear the word homeschool. We're doing it because we got a little taste of it and decided it was the best way to educate our son. I've always thought of myself as a writer.

On Gather, I'm Looking For ...:A place to express my opionions because I don't get to chat with my friends too much these days. I'd like to discuss books with people since my husband isn't a big reader. I'd like to share some of what I've learned as a homeschool teacher. I'd like to find out what other people are thinking about the issue of education these days. I'd like to interact with other writers so I can learn writing skills and publishing tips.

Hi Becky, I lost your note and just refound it. Actually, I've read the first chapter and 1/2 twice a couple of months ago. I have to start over again. It's exciting, but for people not well schooled you can only hang onto the facts for so long :) I have a number of other books along that line. Like this one, they are pretty much for beginners. I learned a lot. I'll let you know when I begin again. Let me know how you do also.

I completely understand about not wanting to miss any of "Lost"--I'm addicted too, but I have a DVR so I can zip through the commercials and not lose any momentum. I hope you'll be able to join us after the episode is over.

Welcome to gather, Becky. I hope you find a place for yourself here. I'm still looking for my place, so maybe we will get to know each other.

Please excuse the gawky caps, but I LOVE THAT BOOK CASE HISTORIES BY KATE ATKINSON!!!! IT'S MY LAST BEST FAVORITE READ. There. I had to do that. When I read Case Histories I had already gone about six stories into my Six Degrees Stories [not posted here on Gather] -- which are mainly writing exercises wherein I let a barely mentioned character from one story become the main character for the next story and so on. Around Story 4, I began to think a long series of works might connect back (if you've seen Short Cuts, based on Raymond Carver's Short Stories, you might see what I mean; or, more recently, Crash].
Anyway, I think I'm on Gather to find an audience for my work, one that responds with critical comments and to find interesting writing. To make connections with other writers, help where I can be helpful, and BE helped.
I am prolific -- sometimes. Also, some of the posts I've made are not brand new. Cold was brand new. The responses to challenges and prompts are brand new. Again, I love the exercise of doing. [I think I've turned this into babble and ramble so will just say -- YES, Kate Atkinson -- wonderful book that. And how great was that compliment to me . . . from you . . . I think I just did a little peacock strut in my head over the buzz that sent me -- thanks.]

Thanks, becky, for your note on Cold. Sorry if my response is a little late -- I didn't know about Pings or that I had any until this evening . . . [trust me, when I say I'm lo-tech, I'm the bottom of the barrel tech. Again, thanks for the earlier, Ping. I liked hearing from you.

You can do it first thing in the spring, after all the flowers have died off, or in the fall. If your climate is warmer, (doesn't go below 50) you could probably do it anytime except active flowering. I live in MI, so I have to do it according to the weather. Your iris's will do much better if they are broken up and give you many more flowers. If the root bulb is too big, all the energy is there instead of the flowers. Good luck!! :)
